The JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) program was created to develop a new fifth-generation all-weather multirole fighter capable of replacing United States and NATO strike fighters. A team of aerospace engineers led by Lockheed Martin created the single-seat, single-engine F-35 Lightning II. It uses stealth technology and features trapezoidal wings and the use of state-of-the-art materials and avionics systems. It has been developed in several different configurations to gain air superiority, provide close air support and engage in offensive missions against ground targets. The F-35A is a conventional takeoff and landing variant, the F-35B a short takeoff and perpendicular landing variant, and the F-35C with folding wings was developed for use aboard aircraft carriers. With its operational flexibility, advanced on-board technologies and impressive innovations, this fighter aircraft has been well received and deployed by the air forces of many countries.
